Caraval by Stephanie Garber

WELCOME TO CARAVAL, WHERE NOTHING IS QUITE WHAT IT SEEMS
AND EVERYTHING IS SHIT

27883214Scarlett has never left the tiny isle of Trisda, pining from afar for the wonder of Caraval, a once-a-year week-long performance where the audience participates in the show.

Caraval is Magic. Mystery. Adventure. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father.

When the sisters’ long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show’s mastermind organiser, Legend.

Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever.

*****

Caraval was selected as our February BOTM over at TheYARoom – A Melbourne-based YA bookclub run by the lovely Sarah and myself – where one book a month is selected through  votes out of four titles, and Caraval was lucky enough to be deemed worthy.

At first, I was actually a little excited, despite the few things Sarah had mentioned about the book before it had been selected. I didn’t know much about Caraval, besides that it was set in some strange twisted reality and in a carnival/circus setting. And tbh, that’s all there is to the entire story.

This book literally took me the entire month to read, from the day the poll results came out to basically the day before our book meet (you can find a wrap up here!)

Not only did it take me an excessively long amount of time to finally finish the damn thing, it left me in a major reading slump. Which is always annoying, the painful feeling of wanting to read, but just not being able to get in the ~mood~

The whole story felt pretty pointless to me! And I loved the only character every else HATED and LOATHED. Did I love him for his looks? Probably . . . I don’t even remember enough of the book to even recall any of the other characters name.

The entire time reading this book, I was left in a constant state of confusion. Who was lying? Was everyone lying? Is the main character an idiot? Is the Caraval even a thing? Or was that another lie?????

My favourite part of the book, was the part where I UNHAULED IT.

I gave this book two measly stars out of five, and I would not really recommend this to anyone ever again.

BUT YOU DO YOU. This is just my opinion.

Until next time,
